Ecología y Cambio Ambiental Global
(Ecology and Global Environmental Change)

Develop solid conceptual and scientific understanding on 1) fundamental biophysical components and processes responsible for the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems and Earth System as a whole, 2) the role of ecosystems in providing ecosystem goods and services, and on 3) how anthropogenic influences have altered ecosystem functioning including the biogeochemical cycles of the Earth System at different spatial and temporal scales, i.e. from local to global and from pre-industrial times to the presence and future. We will explore how the biosphere and the driving ecological processes of different ecosystems have been modified by human interventions and their direct and indirect effects on the chemical and physical characteristics of the atmosphere, climate, and land cover leading to the complex phenomenon called global environmental change. The course will familiarize students with current concepts, theories and approaches to study the mechanisms and reciprocal, complex feedbacks between global environmental change, socio-ecosystems and the Earth. We approach this by lectures, discussions, required readings, essay writing, problem solving, etc. We are also planning to go to field to apply our knowledge in real world situations
